European Painting in the Reference Room
April 21, 2008

Not much is known about this large painting. It is the only non-artist colony painting hanging in the library reference room. It is believed to be one of a pair of paintings that hung in the old Saxon Arms Restaurant, now known as the Snapper Inn. If you know anything about this painting or its mate, we would love to hear from you.

We have heard from someone who may own the mate to this painting. This person believes the painting to be of the French Barbizon School, and to date from 1906, and to have been done by the artist E. Damoye. There is some question as to its provenance – could these paintings have been owned by the Vanderbilt’s previous to their hanging in the Old Saxon Arms Restaurant?
